MULTICULTURAL ADVISORY GROUP
COMMISSION OF INQUIRY – UPDATE

With great pleasure we have received news that the State Government has approved our Commission of Inquiry work and final report for public distribution.

Our report:

Implementing recommendation 21.6 e. of The Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings

Context:

This report outlines the advice and direction stemming from consultation in response to implementing recommendation 21.6 e of the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings. This recommendation attends to meeting the needs of victim-survivors from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds in the therapeutic service system and other related services.

The content in this report is derived from the work and reflections of the Multicultural Advisory Group (MAG), established by the Multicultural Council of Tasmania to provide cultural and strategic advice on problems, barriers and solutions in the therapeutic service system, to the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPAC). The group was formed to ensure genuine community led and culturally appropriate outcomes.

Authors:

Joana Cubillos  & Alberte Toettenborg

Adrian Chu, Alison Dugan, Jal David, John Kamara, Quan Nguyen, Puspa Sherlock and Ivan Shevchenko

We can now share this work with therapeutic services and assist the Government with the implementation of the actions in this report.

I would like to thank Dr. Alberte Toettenborg for her wonderful research on the literature review in preparation for this project and her support and knowledge throughout this process. I would also like to thank the MAG for their time and expertise, but mostly for sharing their experiences in working with communities, and the implacable persistence to improve the system for a safe environment for all children and young people.
