The Multicultural Council of Tasmania has welcomed the increased number of candidates with multicultural backgrounds running in the 2014 local government elections.
People with a culturally diverse background are under-represented in all levels of government and it is good to see that in the 2014 election more people are stepping forward.
“People that are born overseas and migrate to Australia bring skills and talent, but often feel reluctant to take on leadership roles,” said Chairperson, Rohan Wirasinha.
“It’s great that a number of candidates with cultural diverse backgrounds have put themselves forward in this local government election. We are encouraged by this trend,” said Mr Wirasinha.
